To those of you who are not aware of what HBOT is, here is brief introduction:
HBOT, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a procedure in which a person is made to lie down/site in a chamber filled with almost 100% oxygen at 2.5 to 3 times the normal atmospheric pressure. As a result, lot of oxygen is carried by the red blood cells of the blood and also, some amount of oxygen gets dissolved in the plasma. Supplying oxygen to the tissues and areas of the body that are deprived of oxygen due to low blood flow can greatly benefit from HBOT. HBOT results in angiogenesis, a process in which new blood vessels grow ultimately leading to better supply of oxygen to every cell and tissue of the body.
HBOT can help in treating a lot of conditions such as sports injuries, brain stroke, diabetic foot ulcers etc. One other benefit of HBOT that has recently been discovered is that the health of heart can be maintained with HBOT and the functioning of heart can be made better.

What did the studies find about HBOT and heart health?
“Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can improve heart functionality in healthy aging humans” – study conducted by Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research at Shamir Medical Center in B’er Ya’acov.
As a part of the study, a group of people were made to undergo 60 sessions of HBOT. Their cognitive function and heart function was evaluated before the start of the study and after 3 weeks into the study. The researchers were able to find sustained effect of the treatment, “an improvement in contractility function of the heart – meaning, the heart muscle contracted more efficiently over the course of the 60-session protocol”.
Another study in rats figured that HBOT can reduce ‘necrosis (tissue death)’ during myocardial ischemia. (Myocardial Ischemia is a condition when less amount of blood flows into the heart, most likely due to some blockage in the veins.) HBOT has shown improvement in redox control and reduce the mortality rate in acute phase of heart attacks.
What Dr. Karthik Gunasekaran says about HBOT for heart patients?
“HBOT has proven benefits in improving the health condition of people who have suffered from stroke. We have seen definitive improvement in functioning of heart muscles after few sessions of Hyperbaric Therapy”.
Evidently, HBOT has been proving to be an alternative treatment that is totally non-invasive and yielding 100% desired results even with a few sessions.
